Improving health through research
SMDC Health System has a long history of physician research activities. Sponsored clinical research began in 1978 with participation in cancer clinical trials through the North Central Cancer Treatment Group funded by NCI. SMDC Institutional Review Board and other research infrastructure was created in the same year.
In 1990, SMDC Health System established a formal research division to support clinical, translational and health services research. SMDC physicians and scientists are now involved in more than 350 clinical trials and active research projects.
SMDC Health System is now a supporting partner of the Essentia Institute of Rural Health. Through the Institute, physicians and practitioners have the opportunity to be involved in research and education across a five-state area.
